In a secluded Hakka village, fifteen-year-old Yu longs for the first period that will initiate her into the coming-of-age ritual: drinking a sacrificed black capon’s blood and marrying her chosen match. But when she discovers that girls who refuse the ritual become its sacrificial birds — and that the capon chosen for her is the girl she loves — Yu must decide whether remaining human is worth the price.
